As December settles in, we're gearing up for various winter celebrations here in third grade. We decided to focus our winter celebration theme this week on Chinese New Year. While it is still a little ways away, we had a great rug discussion about the holiday, as many of our students celebrate it. We learned that Chinese New Year is a time to visit family and friends, a time to give gifts and well wishes for a prosperous and healthy new year. Students got to learn about the game of dominoes, which some of them were already familiar with, a game traditionally played on the eve of Chinese New Year.
This week we got into small groups and made our own set of dominoes. Then we got to play our game and have a friendly competition against one another.
