This past week's theme at BASE was Fitness Fun!
In third grade, we spent a lot of time reflecting on the benefits of physical exercise in our daily lives. One of the first projects students completed involved examining how the body is affected by physical activities. Students worked in groups and discussed how different parts of the body are affected by exercise including the heart, muscles, lungs, bones, brain, etc. Students used large paper to trace their bodies and worked together as a team to accurately draw the different organs and parts of the body into their traced figures. Check out their life size drawings in the pictures below!
Third grade also thought more about the different types of physical exercises that they know how to do well. Students worked with a partner to create mini books and/or storyboards demonstrating different types of exercise such as swimming, football, lifting weights, ice skating, and gymnastics. They did a great job making "How To..." books and storyboards for other students to read! It was a great way to encourage others to try different types of exercise!!
During gym time, students worked with a partner to test their physical fitness. They worked on exercises including jumping jacks, hula hooping, sit-ups, and push ups. Student were challenged to see how many of each they go do in one minute! Quite the workout!! After recording our numbers, we put our sheets into our time capsules. At the end of the year, we will challenge ourselves again and then compare our results to these first results. Can't wait to see how much we improve over the year!
Lastly, third grade also got to show off their cooking skills once again with a healthy treat! We made Cinnamon Banana Roll-Ups using cinnamon raisin bread, cream cheese, bananas, and of course some extra cinnamon to top it off!
Next week we will continue being physically fit with learning more about nutrition and our bodies along with the nutrition of other living things such as plants. Be sure to check back next week to see what we learn!!
